Back in late 2022, a movement emerged among many RPG design folks – Dungeon23. The goal was to build a megadungeon one room, one day at a time. We didn’t participate, since we knew there was no way we could keep up that kind of pace or creativity – even if we just did it ad-hoc or one week at a time. We’re not dungeon room designers by any means!
However, we’ve now caught wind of this year’s creativity challenge – Lore 24. The goal is to post some lore for a world every day. Now, we know there’s no way we’re going to make it every day either. We’d be excited if we came up with some lore to post every week (52 entries seems like a good goal?). We like coming up with lore, whether just spontaneously or prompted by some random tables. So – that’s what we’re going to do!
To frame this out, there’s two categories we expect we’ll be thinking about. The first is our open-table, loosely West Marches style setting aptly and unoriginally named “Westmarch”. We’ve run in this setting multiple times, in Pathfinder 1e and D&D 5e and have given much thought to running it in Cypher System. We have some bits of lore already worked out that we’ll be fleshing out a bit more during this project.
The second is sci-fi lore. We don’t have a preferred or homebrew sci-fi setting at this time, but we long to run a game in Cypher System or Stars Without Number. So we may be inspired at times to flesh out worlds to visit, aliens to meet, problems to encounter or even just general events in “history” – the future’s past.
We hope you’ll join us on this journey and we’ll see you on Twitter, Mastodon and Bluesky. (we’re hoping to phase out twitter this year, so #ttrpg community let’s decide on a destination!)
